Art²: ART IN THE THIRD DIMENSION

On display July 22nd –August 16, 2008, with an opening reception to be held on July 25th at 7pm with live music from Hiroshi Kishimine & Jon Senna as well as the traditional reception fare, wine sampling and artists meet & greet.

Wilmington’s finest multi-dimensional artists are included in this exciting exhibit: Dixon Stetler, Ashley Hudson, Linda Lugo, Paul Stella, Doug Campbell, Everett Freyberg, Kee Wilde-Ramsing, Vicki Smith, Ben Keys, Jennifer Hodges and Angela Johnson. Art² features new works in a variety of media; metal, textiles, glass, wood, clay, spray paint, aluminum and assemblage of found objects.

From abstract wall hangings to traditional freestanding sculpture, Art² is unique to Bottega’s space; as every piece of artwork will be in the round, although most will be attached to the wall or ceiling. Lugo, Stella and Campbell have even incorporated the fourth dimension of light into their pieces, creating functional light sculptures, sconces and softly lit paintings. Stetler, Freyberg and Hudson construct found objects to express disturbing, thoughtful and often humorous representations. Dixon Stetler reflects, “Yucky items usually left alone when spotted on the sidewalk – flip-flops, gloves, cigarette butts, and hoses– these are the inspiration for my work. All the disposable stuff that comes into our lives for just a blip is funny, yet tragic. It should make us uncomfortable. Discomfort, mixed with humor, is the mother of change. By using materials that we use every day, my work is accessible and collaborative, and everyone gets to participate. Garbage men, lost-and-found boxes, and dumpsters supply my art habit. Why buy art supplies when they are free and everywhere? Through sculpture I nurture, offering shade on a hot day, a ride across the river, or a safe place to sleep. I am adding to the conversation.”

In addition, Vicky Smith and Ben Keys have combined their mainstay mediums of Smith’s clay and Key’s oil paint to create a magnificent collaborative triptych. While Wilde-Ramsing, Hodges and Johnson remain true to form in their respective mediums of metal, textiles and glass. This amazingly daring display of artwork is on view through mid-August and should not be missed.

Dates of this exhibit are July 22nd – August 16th 2008

An opening reception will be held on Friday July 25th from 7 – 10pm with an artists meet & greet, as well as, live music, hors d'oeuvres and the traditional gallery fare.

New Hanover County Public Library

Valid from Jun 6, 2008 thru Sep 1, 2008
New Hanover County Public Library’s annual Summer Reading Club begins Friday, June 6, and preregistration is open now at www.nhclibrary.org. This year’s theme is “Catch the Reading Bug!”

Online registration for Summer Reading Club is new this year, and so is this: ADULTS may join as well as children and teenagers! Members will keep online logs of the time they spend reading, and can post comments about books on the library’s web page. Club members pick their own reading material and may count time spent reading magazines, newspapers, audiobooks, and web sites as well as books.

Age groups for Summer Reading Club 2008 are:

“Catch the Reading Bug” - children ages 0 to 11 will earn stickers, a bookmark, a certificate and a Treasure Chest prize while they complete a total of 12 hours reading or listening to someone else read aloud.
“Metamorphosis” - tweens and teens ages 11 to 18 who log reading time during June, July, and August will be entered in a monthly drawing for gift cards and other prizes.
· “Don’t Bug Me, I’m Reading” – adults who log reading time and post reading recommendations online during June, July, and August will be entered in a monthly drawing for gift cards and prizes.
